nfs server v4 without rpcbind

krosik asked:

could somebody tell me why rpcbind is needed as a service (in RHEL) while nfs4 doesn’t need it? Can’t understand that because everythink (lock, statd, mount) are incorporate into protocol v4. I’ve lost 4 days to find information but can’t figure out what the hell is the reason.

I answered:

As noted in Red Hat’s documentation, rpcbind is provided only for backward compatibility when the server must run NFSv2 or v3. If you are only using NFSv4 you don’t need it and you can disable the service.

chkconfig rpcbind off
