CentOS 6 newbie: how to install libtiff properly (or similar libraries) on cento 6

doon asked:

I am trying to setup skype on centos 6.3 on lenovo thinkpad 430. I first tried the instructions on this http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Skype. which failed with Error: Protected multilib versions: libtiff-3.9.4-6.el6_3.i686 != libtiff-3.9.4-5.el6_2.x86_64

Then I tried instructions on http://linuxinternetworks.com/applications/how-to-install-skype-on-centos6-rhel6/. I got the skype binary but it (expectedly) failed stating libtiff.so.4 not available.
I searched and came acroos http://pkgs.org/centos-6-rhel-6/centos-rhel-updates-i386/libtiff-3.9.4-6.el6_3.i686.rpm.html. However. I installed using yum localinstall –nogpgcheck ./libtiff-3.9.4-6.el6_3.i686.rpm. It said nothing to do.
Then I did yum install libtiff which installed some new versions. But I still do not see /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 (or 4) that is required for skype.
The question is how do I find out what was installed (and what path) when I did yum install libtiff..

I answered:

You need to update your entire system first.

# yum upgrade
